OBJECTIVES
  • Enhance understanding of the three major dimensions that put the company’s problems into perspective: efficiency, risk management and innovation;
  • Gain knowledge about the challenges faced when managing companies at different stages of their life-cycle: in a start-up, in developing companies, in scale-ups and in mature and complex companies;
  • Foster strategic thinking from the point of view of value creation, which is the dominant paradigm;
  • Promote understanding of the role played by innovation in organisations as a response to changes in context;
  • Equip participants with “management skills” in an organised space – i.e., educational model – based on the sharing of experience and business initiatives;
  • Prepare participants for a more effective performance of leading roles;
  • Encourage the development of transversal skills and foster lifelong learning;
  • Promote social and professional relationships between ESADE and Católica Porto Business School alumni as well as in the Executive MBA’s Clube de Empresas (Business Club).
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

This programme is suited for professionals from a variety of educational and professional backgrounds who work in different sectors of activity. They have in common their work experience in the business world and the aim to upgrade or build management skills.

The Executive MBA is for managers and executives in companies or institutions who seek to upgrade their skills and meet the following entry requirements:

  • Holder of a recognised academic degree;
  • Minimum of 5 years’ professional experience;
  • Fluency in English;
  • GMAT is recommended – (this requirement is not mandatory).

Duration & Teaching Timetable

Duration

2 years – September 2018 to September 2020.

Teaching Timetable

The programme runs once a month as follows:

Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays from 8:30 am to 05:45 pm
Saturdays from 8:30 am to 01:00 pm
Complementary activities: Thursdays from 06:30 pm to 08:00 pm

WHY THIS FORMAT?

The aim of the Executive MBA programme is to allow participants to balance their personal and professional lives while immersing themselves more into the learning processes with as little impact on their work activity as possible.

Students are therefore immersed in School activities during term time and are free to manage study and class preparation time on the remaining weekends. Between terms, they are divided in study groups and benefit from tutorial monitoring from the faculty.

Structure

The Executive MBA curriculum was designed based on the assumption that companies are social organisations (efficient for production) operating in a context – vaguely described by many as an “ecosystem” – that is affected by the formal and informal institutions that govern society as well as by technology. Their existence is conceptualised as a set of contracts that, regarded as a whole, define and determine their business perimeter.

This definition of a company greatly affects our approach to the teaching and practice of management. First of all, it pervades a vision on the birth, growth and death of companies, and, from our perspective, underpins the explanations for the diversity of business solutions – i.e., business models –than can be found internationally and more often than not within a single country.

The Executive MBA programme consists of 3 blocks: 1) Starting a Business; 2) Nurture and Grow; 3) Master and Sustain

ZERO MOMENT – SEPTEMBER

The welcome period is a sensitive and often defining time that may have a marked effect as the programme unfolds. Católica Porto Business School pays particular attention to this moment and sets clearly defined targets for it: welcoming, introducing and integrating students in the School and in the programme’s ambitions.

The purpose of homogenisation is to ensure that participants – with wide-ranging educational and professional backgrounds – are equipped with a set of concepts and techniques that make up a common denominator which is a sine qua non for the knowledge acquisition process in the field of management.

STARTING A BUSINESS – FROM SEPTEMBER TO MARCH

Entrepreneurship can be described as a search for alternatives – or business models – to meet a latent demand. Conceptually, and from a purely economic point of view, it is a process of trial and error to achieve more effective solutions, i.e., solutions that bring us closer to the frontier of production possibility or that lead to its expansion. The essential management tools for an entrepreneur in these circumstances are metrics to measure efficiency and the creation and distribution of value. In essence, it is the language of business.

INTERNATIONAL WEEK IN GERMANY – MARCH

The international week in Germany will be carried out in partnership with the German-Portuguese Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The latter will organise a roadshow focusing on visits to companies based in different parts of Germany and operating in different sectors so that students can become acquainted with the country’s different realities.

Germany is a highly competitive business location with many different facets that need to be understood:

  • A regional structure with its particular economic strengths (partly driven by historical reasons);
  • The importance of medium-sized companies, often perceived as the backbone of German economy;
  • Regionalisation (i.e.,16 federal states enjoying a high degree of self-government);
  • The generally constructive cooperation between employers / efficiently organised business associations and strong unions;
  • Public/private cooperation in the field of  research and development, which represents a huge boost for innovation;
  • Close collaboration in the educational system, including the dual system of vocational training designed to provide the market with qualified human resources in alignment with companies’ needs.

...these and many other aspects that are crucial to German economy will be discussed with a number of selected experts during the Week spent in Germany.

NURTURE AND GROW – FROM APRIL TO DECEMBER

Improving the business model becomes a natural step when the value proposition goes beyond the limits of ideas, withstands the market test and when the need to tackle a complex organization becomes apparent. This involves understanding the interactions that take place in the multiple markets in which the company operates and gaining better knowledge of its inner “self” by setting up a system to collect and process information that is consistent with its value proposition – i.e., business ethics, if the latter is understood as a profound reflection on the creation and distribution of the value for which the company exists.

MASTER AND SUSTAIN – FROM JANUARY TO JULY

Once an efficient scale of production and an appropriate risk distribution have been achieved, the company focuses on ensuring business continuity without neglecting strategic risks. These may make the company feel the need to readjust and – in periods of great turmoil – reinvent itself to meet a new paradigm. The purpose of this module is to think beyond the company and the nearest time and space. The challenge now is to ensure the sustainability of the company in the face of a change (or threat of change) of context. We should be capable of testing emerging discussions based upon a trial and error logic.

International Week at Esade – Barcelona – SEPTEMBER

In line with the aim of providing international exposure to MBA students, the last week of the Executive MBA will be spent at ESADE, which has been a partner of Católica Porto Business School for many years. The week in Barcelona places emphasis on a company’s overall situation. The aim is to provide students with an interactive experience that incorporates the most relevant concepts of Strategic Management in a business simulation game monitored by the ESADE faculty, who will help them to look at the different business options from a strategic standpoint.

CLUBE DE EMPRESAS (BUSINESS CLUB)

The concept behind Clube de Empresas (Business Club) is that business schools are knowledge “accelerators”, due to their capacity to study and systematise business practices and experiences. Clube de Empresas was planned to interface between the university and the business world and to serve as a platform for multiple projects linked by a common element: the engagement of companies in training and development programmes for the management aimed at getting better prepared professionals.

Clube de Empresas is made up of 17 companies that will secure study visits, contact sessions with CEOs, participation in the MBA’s Advisory Board, participation in seminars and supply of case studies to support the projects of some of the programme’s modules. The Executive MBA’s Clube de Empresas is composed of:

Soft Skills

Managers stand out more and more by their ability to expand their sensitive side in topics that are complementary to a more technical dimension – the so-called soft skills – and to look at their dreams and trajectories, personal and professional, from a critical standpoint.
The Executive MBA will continue to rely on the expertise of Dynargie for the Soft Skills Portfolio, although based on a new methodology.

While attending the programme, students will also take part in several Career Sessions led by the Careers and Development department and offered on an optional basis. The Executive MBA students will be able to attend (4) different workshops on career development and on how to communicate effectively with the market. The main goals are as follows:

  • Create and optimise a CV according to career goals;Structure impacting cover letters and emails;
  • Create a profile on LinkedIn and learn how to use this business networking site;
  • Optimise strategies to proactively seek opportunities;
  • Prepare for recruitment procedures, more specifically for job interviews;
  • Develop communication skills, in particular pitching.

360-DEGREE ASSESSMENT OF EACH PARTICIPANT

Icone Avaliação 360An MBA is naturally aimed at developing students’ technical skills. Personal development, however, is another major aim. Hence, the 360-degree assessment carried out in the beginning and at the end of Católica Porto Business School’s Executive MBA programme as a means of rendering the outcome of the programme more tangible. This assessment is intended to develop social and interpersonal skills. This 360-degree diagnosis (“My leadership”) helps participants to know themselves better and provides access to one session of bespoke coaching.

Tutorial Monitoring

An MBA is a general programme that covers the different areas of management. The Executive MBA will therefore include, in addition to its Scientific Director, a team of lecturers in Operations Management, Strategy and Innovation, Finance, Human Capital and Marketing. They will be responsible for coordinating content in each field of knowledge and will work with Clube de Empresas (Business Club) to decide which case studies are to be applied in the different modules. It will also ensure tutorial monitoring to students throughout the programme.

Católica Porto Business School’s MBA programme was an exceptional experience that allowed me to enrich my social and technical skills in an extraordinary way. Thanks to this self-improvement I am now able to achieve one of the goals that led me to choose the International MBA in the first place – rise to higher levels in my professional career, especially from a global and international perspective. The faculty was, for me, one of the most valuable aspects of the programme, not only because of the vast knowledge and extensive work experience shown by its members, but also for their strong focus on the practical and professional contexts and their great willingness to help students.

The international weeks, particularly the one at ESADE, and the foreign teaching staff add an important international complexity to the programme enabling students to perceive the distinct facets of management in different cultural contexts, which are crucial in the current business context. The team spirit instilled in the group and experienced by its members throughout the programme is distinctive and fundamental inasmuch as it allows us to gain a new family for life, both for the time spent together and for the sharing of experiences.

All those who decide to do an MBA are special people. They are people who believe that they can be instrumental in the building of a better future. When we started the programme, the country was facing major economic difficulties and we soon realised that we must all be part of the solution, each one playing their own role, so we were always partners with the School in the search for optimal solutions. We are proud of what we have achieved.

The great diversity of experiences and wide range of ages in an Iberian class, together with a sense of contest with history based on exemplary teamwork, explain the overall success of our participation. We have learned a great deal from each other, and, much more than a network of contacts, we have all gained a new family. We have learned a great deal from our masters. National and foreign faculty members with recognised academic background and entrepreneurial experience have made a difference, giving priority to the transfer of a solid knowledge base instead of imparting mere recipes.

All this was supported by countless assignments, individual and in groups, many of which were directly applied to the reality of some of us. It was a long-distance race, done with great effort, but one in which we emerged as winners in the end! These are the tests that make us stronger.

An MBA is an important event in our lives and, for this reason, our goals must be clearly defined and choosing the right programme is key. In my case, I was driven by the wish to validate the skills and knowledge acquired along a career with several years of international experience. The Católica Porto Business School’s MBA programme was the one that seemed to me to be more compatible with my needs: the excellence of the Católica brand combined with its competent and recognised faculty and the programme’s strongly international component were the right ingredients.

The superior quality of this programme is visible from the outset and is present at all times: the care paid to the selection interviews, the permanent contact and constant provision of information about the whole process culminate in a path that while marked by rigour and accuracy it is also extremely challenging and rewarding.

Now that I have learned new concepts, relearned others and viewed the same problems from another perspective, I feel reborn as a professional, much more confident and much more capable and empowered. I certainly owe all this to the excellent faculty (because we can use the MBA to the best advantage and their support and willingness are crucial), to my classmates (who are my friends today) with whom I have had the privilege to share the 10th edition and to the entire school staff, always friendly and welcoming.

Católica Porto Business School’s MBA has exceeded my expectations and to some extent it has influenced my decision to pursue an international career and use all my knowledge and experience in a different setting. I must emphasise the quality of the faculty, the topical practical cases developed inside and outside the classroom, enabling us a better grasp of the concepts addressed in the different courses, the selection process and the level of the admitted students, which allowed me to enhance my networking and to know distinct experiences. The MBA’s curriculum is very well put together to meet the needs of businesses in the face of the current economic environment in Portugal and worldwide and to train managers who can address these challenges.

I have a degree in Business Management and Administration from Católica Porto Business School and I believe it is vital to update knowledge and upgrade the skills that are needed to perform duties in the field of management. Católica was my first and only option due to its undeniable value and recognition, from the faculty to the administrative support staff.

Because I am fully convinced that the only way to enhance my Organisation’s competitiveness is to invest in training and in the development of human capital, I chose the MBA as a way to foster new career development capabilities.

The school selects the group in a particularly careful way, the latter consisting of elements with a variety of academic backgrounds and different work experiences. Conviviality and knowledge sharing foster my development as an element of a team and allow me to turn differences into opportunities. In addition to technical skills, the programme is strongly committed to the development of personal skills, which are a valuable asset in one’s personal and professional evolution.

At a time of financial and political turmoil, the MBA boosted my confidence and flexibility to cope with unforeseen incidents. Aware of this learning, I am prepared to accept and embrace new challenges, strengthen my role with regard to relationship management, information sharing and motivating working teams.

I decided to do the MBA for the same reasons as any other individual would – exclusively for professional reasons. Coming from a totally different field of expertise, the MBA offered me what is most looked for in labour market today – to differentiate myself and to differentiate the service that I provided. As a holder of a degree in law and working in that area, which due to its complexity focuses significantly on the technical component, I saw the MBA as a way to broaden horizons and develop other technical skills that would bring me closer to those I was providing services to.

The fact is that the MBA has enabled me to achieve those goals and acquire those technical capacities (today I am able to talk to CFOs, business managers, and marketeers without having the feeling that we speak different languages), but it also went far beyond the scope I had initially assigned to it.

I had the privilege and the luck of attending the MBA with a group of unique students coming from widely different backgrounds and with very diverse experiences, which they were willing to share, and with soft skills that matched (and exceeded even) their technical skills. I learned a great deal both in and outside class, from each one of the classmates that were and are part of the 9th edition of Católica’s MBA.

Católica Porto Business School’s MBA was a fantastic experience lived in a great atmosphere between faculty, classmates and the entire school staff. The stimulating learning environment and the highly experienced faculty, both academically and professionally meant rigour and strictness as well as sharing and inspiration in which dialogue and the exchange of ideas prevailed. The programme helped me to complement my knowledge of finance, accounting, marketing and operations in a coherent whole, closing loopholes and sparking innovation, factors which are increasingly important to meet the daily challenges posed by international business management. I should also like to underline the importance of the international weeks, the partnership with Dynargie and the events and activities organised by the school, all of them carefully planned and highly appreciated by everyone.

At the end of the rich learning journey that was the 11th edition of Católica Porto Business School’s MBA, we had the opportunity to experience a true business simulation game. The game allowed us to integrate a large part of the concepts learned in class (marketing, finance, human resources, production, strategy) by putting them into action and immediately seeing the impact of the decision-making process.

The international week at ESADE enhanced the relevance of teamwork, the commitment to an objective and competitiveness in the markets where organisations operate. I should also like to underline the added value brought to the whole process by the ESADE faculty, by “forcing” us to think and act in an innovative way. In short, it was a truly enriching and interactive lesson in Management Strategy that will be etched in my memory forever.

The week at ESADE had three different facets:

  • having the privilege of engaging with a school and faculty of excellence;
  • experiencing the challenge of a management simulation exercise which feels almost real and forces us to think in a strategic and operational way and to make decisions based on the knowledge acquired in the course of the MBA;
  • deep and intensive teamwork where each individual plays a key role in the final outcome.

It is a week marked by great intensity and discipline, only possible thanks to the skills and work capacity acquired with our teachers throughout the MBA, which enable us to understand concepts and make quick decisions within the competition’s global context.

However, it is mostly a week for sharing and witnessing the union and friendship links that grow between us and that we will cherish for the rest of our lives. We are left with the memories and the experience of moments of hard work and application of knowledge as well of good humour and comradeship.

Due to the assignments for the MBA’s course in the Marketing course, the office became the first Portuguese law firm to be studied in academia, something which has earned us significant national and international reviews. While opening our doors to people outside the organisation and taking up their suggestions appeared to be a rather complex thing to do, we found, in practice, that it was fundamental to engage with those who master this area of knowledge and think about it openly. It was equally crucial to understand how important this is and to set in motion the plan designed by the group of students, who were able to watch and follow up the implementation of their recommendations, every step of the way. The challenge to differentiate took shape and gained content, and now that we have achieved it, it has established new objectives and posed new challenges. A special thank you goes to Católica Porto Business School’s team for inviting us to take part in the challenge and, above all, for making it possible to integrate the real school into real life.

Within the framework of our partnership with Católica Porto Business School, we have agreed to take in a group of students enrolled in the MBA’s Marketing course, and I’m glad we did so.

Our challenge to the group was the following: they were to solve a specific Marketing issue for which we had still not found a satisfactory solution.

The methodology used, the students’ natural curiosity, their rigour and their “independent” vision helped us to find “the” solution to the problem.

The experience was, therefore, very positive for our team and for our company.

The Executive MBA provides students with a holistic and systemic vision of management that motivates and challenges them to design and implement integrated management systems. The search for the best combination of people, processes and systems in an organisational ecosystem allows to focus on value creation provided by the implementation of a strategy. The exploring of practical cases, including successes and failures, helps to illustrate the rationales that are taught both historically and in practice. The challenge posed to students to build and explore cases in the classroom stimulates group interaction; listening skills; speaking skills; cooperation and collaboration!

The change in paradigm of the Executive MBA that is now being proposed is a consequence of Católica Porto Business School’s concern with bringing its educational offers into line with the entrepreneurial dynamism by focusing on the priorities of every stage of corporate development. It is a promise of value designed from within businesses that enables to adjust content to existing needs in a perfect way.

This innovation also has to do with the fact that this is a process based on an initial skills assessment that makes it possible to define a development model to train and develop professionals capable of creating a corporate sustainability commitment suited to the business ecosystem.

It is therefore the recognition that the School is naturally an integral component of an ecosystem and calls for an active involvement in business life.
