MBA Internacional na China

The 12th edition of International MBA visited China, between 1st and 8th april, the venue that was chosen to the international mission.

This week, which is a partnership with the University of Saint Joseph, School of Business, aims to strengthen the understanding of the business environment of Macao, Zhongshan, Guangzhou and Hong Kong. This combination of cities reflects the current policy of liaison between Macau and Guangdong Province, China, as well as being associated with Pearl River's political and financial center.

Divided between Macau, Zhonshang and Hong Kong, this week aims to raise awareness of the economic, social, political and legal reality of one of the world's major powers. This week is a result from a partnership with the University of Saint Joseph and it aims to reinforce the business environment understanding of the visited cities.

The choice of these cities is related to the relevance of the Macao context as a strategic bridge between the Portuguese-speaking countries, which reinforces the assumed position of the Católica Porto Business School in these countries.
In Macau, the group started their week with a tour in the historical area of Macau where they met the Ruins of São Paulo and the A-Ma Temple. In terms of tour visits we highlight the Venetian Resort, one of the largest casinos in the world, followed by the Macau Forum and the Bank of China. Already in Zongsham the students had a seminar on Regional Development and Clusters in Pearl River Delta.

On April 5 the MBA participated in the 1st Forum "Development of the Tsui Hang New District under Guangdong and Macao SAR Cooperation. The first quarter of MBA Atlântico in Porto has ended

MBA Atlântico

The first quarter of the 7th edition MBA Atlântico in Porto has ended. In May, students will go to Luanda, city that will welcome them to the second stage of the program.

MBA Atlântico, which brings together 21 professionals, including Angolans, Brazilians, Cape Verdeans and Portuguese, with a mission to train managers focused on internationalization through the Portuguese language space, had remarkable moments in the first stage, which took place in Porto, in Portugal.

The journey of Atlantico’s students was composed of activities that surpassed the space of the classroom and put them in contact with different market experiences. During the visits to Schmitt Elevadores and Frezite, the students went through the manufacturing parks, accompanied by professionals from different fields of activity and knew the internal dynamics of the companies. In the seminars promoted by Católica Porto Business School, they discussed themes such as Economy, Sustainability, Branding, among other issues of relevance to the business scenario. At Connecting With Business and Career Day events students were able to share experiences with other professionals and establish an enriching networking.

Prepared and led by Professor Rui Lourenço, the Atlânticos have also participated in a Soft Skills discipline where they have developed various activities to work on essential business skills such as leadership, team spirit and emotional intelligence. The discipline ended with a sailing experience. The regatta was successfully completed by all vessels and each student experienced the day-to-day challenges in the companies in this team building activity.

Even with the busy schedule, MBA Atlantico’s students also discovered the charms of Porto, established important connections among all, and enthusiastically celebrated each experience.

Católica Porto Business School Ethical Forum

Forum de ética

Two years and 24 companies later, the forum continues to be a space of reflection for business leaders.

Católica Porto Business School created an Ethics Forum in 2015.

This decision was the result of the lack of a space for reflection for business leaders, which was not a space of information transmission, but a moment of individual discovery and promotion of discovery in others and where topics relevant to each leader and its organization could be discussed.

The objectives of the Forum are:

• Encourage and support reflection on business ethics;
• To promote the exchange of experiences between organizations;
• Create and share knowledge in the field of ethics;
• To promote greater adaptation of the offer of Católica Porto Business School to real needs

Two years later, we find that this meeting space makes more and more sense. Building a trusting environment has allowed us to develop activities and discuss current and sometimes difficult issues to approach in business context, but also to share experiences among its members. For example, it was twice possible to have the whole group work on a topic proposed by a Forum member.

We think that the Ethics Forum of the Católica Porto Business School has become a very special space!

It is more or less consensual that business ethics is fundamental for society to stay on the path of sustainable development and that bad ethical practices have increasingly impacted the reputation of companies, accounting for this intangible asset more than half the value of a brand. But being aware of it is not enough! In fact we need to act for the development of (more) ethical organizational cultures. Regularly speaking about business ethics will be a stimulus for us to put ourselves a fundamental question: What is my responsibility in promoting sustainable organizations? Or put another way: What is my responsibility in promoting (more) ethical (or more) organizational cultures?

There are already 30 people from 24 companies in the Ethics Forum of the Católica Porto Business School. Although this group is expected to remain contained in its size, in order to maintain an environment of security and trust that allows for effective sharing, we remain open to new members.

This space for dialogue, reflection and action for responsible leaders is therefore a contribution of the Católica Porto Business School, so that we can increasingly move from words to deeds, reinforcing the development of (more) ethical cultures in our companies and in society.

Christmas Campaign - basket of goods construction for Kastelo Kids

Associação Castelo - Campanha Solidária

Thank you for helping us build the Christmas basket for the Kastelo kids. With the generosity of all, we have been able to garner several foods that we are sure will make a difference for these families.

Kastelo is the first Pediatric Continued Care and Palliative Care Unit in Portugal and the Iberian Peninsula, and fourth in Europe.

The Association NOMEIODONADA IPSS has as a future project to implement a Continued Care and Palliative Care Unit for children from zero to eighteen years. It is a pioneering project in Portugal, which will encompass all children with chronic pathology. Paulo Cesar Motta from PUC-Rio at Católica Porto Business School

Paulo Cesar Motta, brazilian expert in consumers at a disadvantage, he taught last March 31, in Católica Porto Business School, a seminar related to marketing aimed for the most disadvantaged sectors of developed countries.

In this seminar, entitled "After all, does marketing reach the urban poor?” the Professor at the PUC-Rio raised the issue using the extensive experience that builds up in Brazil, where a considerable part of the population lives on low incomes. After a Brazilian case profile, this reality has been contextualized in the European situation through a question: "What is the European country where the minimum wage is higher than the salary of 85% of people around the world?”. The answer then was given: "Portugal".

This example shaped the rest of the seminar, which drew attention to the lack of practical knowledge of everyday real needs of the disadvantaged, camouflaged by the distance between social classes and strata of society, makes this an untapped market. Through various real examples, Paulo Cesar Motta pointed that many of the examples seen in Brazil can be observed, and taken advantage of, in European cities.

The event ended with a session of questions and answers and discussion among those present.

Paulo Cesar Motta is the current director of the IAG - Escola de Negócios da Pontifícia Universidade Católica at Rio de Janeiro and he was in Portugal at the MBA Atlântico closing ceremony, joint program between the PUC-Rio, Católica Porto Business School and Universidade Católica de Luanda.

João Pinto and Paulo Alves are the two researchers of the Católica Porto Business School who are carrying out this project.
The research has two main objectives. On the one hand, to analyse the evolution of project finance global operations, with particular emphasis on the comparison of two geographies: US vs. Western Europe. It also aims to study the factors that determine the pricing of loans by banks under this structured financing typology. On the other hand, it aims to investigate the motivations underlying companies from Western Europe to opt for a financing through project finance to the detriment of any other syndicated loan type.

Blind test proves quality of Portuguese footwear

The Research Centre for Management Studies and Applied Economics at Católica Porto Business School recently released a study developed for APICCAPS - the association representing the sector -, on the image of the Portuguese footwear. This study was carried out by a team of researchers who inquired and interviewed more than 300 national and international companies and individuals. The team was coordinated by Susana Costa e Silva, Professor at the Católica Porto Business School.

The most innovative aspect of this work was a "blind test" made to 85 professional footwear buyers in one of the largest and most prestigious international trade fairs, MICAM. It was concluded that, not knowing the origin of the footwear, buyers value most the Portuguese shoes than the Italian ones. But when the origin is revealed, the Italian footwear continues to be rated 15% above the national footwear. Still, this differential is considerably lower, approximately half of that recorded nearly a decade ago. This development shows that the promotion strategy adopted by the Portuguese footwear has had a positive impact on its image.

Double Graduation Programme

The Double Graduation Programme IAG PUC-Rio - Católica Porto Business School took place in January in Porto.

The class, consisting of 16 students of the IAG at the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, was at Católica Porto Business School for three intensive weeks that are part of the Double Graduation Programme, which assigns a double diploma from both schools.

The course began on January 4 with an opening seminar by Miguel Pereira Leite, President of the Municipal Assembly of Porto.

Besides the teaching component, the programme also included a visit to Schmitt-Sohn’s headquarters, a joint “on-foot hunt” with the classes of the MBA Atlântico and the MBA International, and a foreclosure with a sailing outdoor event and diplomas delivery.

“On-Foot Hunt” - Activity joins MBA Atlântico, MBA International and Double Graduation Programme students

On January 9, the “On-Foot Hunt” activity was attended by 66 international students: 16 of the Double Graduation Programme, 18 of the MBA Atlântico and 32 of the MBA International.

The event, held in partnership with Dynargie, seeks to create the ideal conditions to establish networking among the three classes, as well as to get international students to know the city of Porto through various challenges that occur in the downtown. Due to the downpour felt that day, the activity was redesigned to take place in the Católica Porto Business School facilities and, even without the outdoor experience, it was considered a success.

It enabled the three classes to meet and exchange experiences in an activity of healthy competition. The experience also included a lunch and a friendly performance of the Folklore Group of Zebreiros, which made known to international students some of the typically Portuguese customs and traditions.

Católica Porto Business School Ethics Forum

Given that business ethics is essential for society to achieve sustainable development, but also the conviction that bad ethical practices have effects on the reputation that is now more than 50% of the value of a brand, the Católica Porto Business School has created an Ethics Forum which, supporting the performance of its mission, aims to:

  • Encourage and support a reflection on business ethics
  • Promote a sharing of experiences between organizations;
  • Create and share knowledge in the ethics field;
  • Promote greater adaptation to market needs.

What led to the beginning of this Forum was the realization of the absence of a reflection space for business leaders that was not an information transmission space, but a moment of individual discovery, discovery promotion in others and where the issues that each of the members want could be discussed.

The reflection and experiences exchange will essentially be focused on the Forum member companies practice, always using innovative methodologies to promote debate. To create and share knowledge it is expected not only to put forth case studies but also the creation of a specific channel for dissemination of the acquired knowledge. To promote greater adaptation to market needs there will also be created an Advisory Council for the courses offered by the Católica Porto Business School.

Three annual sessions are expected but, depending on the members desire, there may be organized other initiatives, exclusive or open to other audiences.

Católica Porto Business School Ethics Forum consists now of 14 people from 10 different companies, a number that can still grow, while maintaining a safe and reliable environment, enabling an effective sharing.

As PME expostas à concorrência internacional são o foco do MBA Internacional

Logotipo MBA Internacional

FAE/EDP 2015 Award

Prémio FAE

FAE/EDP 2015 Award

“ZIPPY Case: Making the world a playground”, presented by the Management and Economy Faculty, selected as one of the best.

The FAE/EDP Award is an Enterprise Administrators Forum (FAE) initiative, aiming to challenge business schools in Portugal to produce case studies on the portuguese reality.

Many portuguese business schools participated in the competition, submitting several cases. The jury, consisting of the direction of FAE, evaluated each of them and selected five cases. The “Zippy Case” from Susana Costa e Silva, professor at the Management and Economy Faculty, in collaboration with Cláudia Braga da Cunha, marketing master's student, was selected as one of the top 5 cases presented.

The case study was conducted with Sonae SR, specifically on Zippy, the company's unit dedicated to clothing, footwear and childcare articles for children from 0 to 14 years. The elements of the brand's strategy of internationalisation were studied, considering not only the selection of markets and entry modes, but also the need for adaptation and standardisation of different variables that define the marketing mix of the emblem. One of the strategies to which a greater attention was given was the entrance in Muslim markets, where the tag had to be slightly modified, as well as their collections.

Generally speaking, the goal is to withdraw knowledge which show the setting of targets by the mark, always bearing in mind the need to take into account the experience and the talent of a management team, whilst intangible assets of capital importance in the process, as well as the ability to adapt to the constantly changing surroundings. The case study counts additionally with teaching notes for class room application. To the authors of each of these selected case studies will be given a reward prize of 3000 euro.

As predicted on the regulation, the next phase consists on the delivery of these case-studies to another Juri, formed by president and 4 other members of the general council of FAE (Dr. João Salgueiro, Dr. Eduardo Catroga, Engª. Esmeralda Dourado, Drª. Estela Barbot e Dr. Gilberto Jordan) for choosing the final winner. This score evaluation is ongoing at this moment.

Congrats to the case study authors!

Diaspora is a concept normally associated to a vast group of people that leave their origin country to live in another country. In this sense, the concept is often associated to adversities and difficulties on the origin country. However, recently there has been a more positive approach to the phenomenon with the identification of a set of economic advantages resultant from it:  contributions to foreign direct investment, contributions to entrepreneurial financing in the country of origin, creation of knowledge networks and networks of contacts, technology transfer, facilitating channels for business intelligence on access to new markets, access to local resources, economic diplomacy, are just some examples of the potential gains associated with Diaspora and that may be an important source of competitive advantage for a country.

The conference was attended by 28 researchers from 18 institutions of higher education, located in 7 countries that gave 29 presentations.

Abstract

The recent experience of a Great Recession has brought the effectiveness of fiscal policy back into focus. Fiscal multipliers do, however, vary greatly over time and place. Running VARs for a large number of countries, we document a strong correlation between wealth inequality and the magnitude of fiscal multipliers. To explain this finding, we develop a life-cycle, overlapping generations economy with uninsurable labor market risk. We calibrate our model to match key characteristics of a number of OECD economies, including the distribution of wages and wealth, social security, taxes and debt and study the effects of changing policies and various forms of inequality on the fiscal multiplier. We find that the fiscal multiplier is highly sensitive to the fraction of the population who face binding credit constraints and also negatively related to the average wealth level in the economy. This explains the correlation between wealth inequality and fiscal multipliers.

Liliana Fernandes, docente da Faculdade de Economia e Gestão, colaborou, enquanto membro do Conselho Consultivo, no mais recente relatório da UNICEF, o Innocenti Report Card 12 – Children of the Recession – Impact of the economic crisis on child well-being in rich countries”, lançado internacionalmente no passado dia 28 de Outubro de 2014, em Roma, Itália.

Careers without Borders: Critical Perspectives

Drogas e Propinas: avaliações do impacto legislativo
