The Católica Porto Business School is an innovative school in the teaching of economics and management, with a close collaboration with the business world and with a wide network of partnerships that fosters international mobility. It is a school of excellence that is recognised both in Portugal and abroad.

The double degree with Lancaster University Management School (LUMS), a world-class top management school with triple accreditation which consistently integrates several of its top 10 UK’s programmes, strengthens significantly our internationalisation strategy by introducing a new dimension to students who might be interested in gaining academic experience abroad.

"In reality, the double degree allows a student to obtain two Masters Degrees in two years: one at Católica Porto Business School and one at Lancaster University Management School. Entry in the double degree allows the choice, made by the student, of the Masters programme they wish to take at Católica Porto Business School and at Lancaster University Management School. 

Four of our Masters programme make part of the double degree: Business Economics, Finance, Management and Marketing. At Lancaster University Management School students may also opt from a choice of five Masters: Finance, International Business and Strategy, Money, Banking and Finance,Management and Business Analytics. Católica Porto Business School offers four master's degrees that give the possibility of pursuing a double degree with Lancaster University Management School, namely the master's degrees in Business Economics, Finance, Management and Marketing. Once admitted in the double degree, the student must choose which programme they will follow at Católica Porto Business School and at Lancaster University Management School.

It is of the utmost importance to underline that specific paths have been drawn in the transition Católica Porto Business School and Lancaster University Management School, which implies that the choice of the Masters taken at Católica Porto interferes with the Masters the student may follow at Lancaster University Management School. These paths are defined here under. By choosing the Masters the student would like to attend, they will see the paths which they will follow within the scope of the double degree.

How can the double degree contribute to a successful career? Firstly, it exposes students to an experience in a different country and culture, which in itself is essential to improving the English language skills and help create an international network of contacts. Secondly, it adds an international dimension to the academic career, which can be decisive for students wishing to come to work in companies and institutions operating on a global scale. In particular, we hope that the excellent reputation of the Católica Porto Business School and Lancaster University Management School allow students of double degree get interesting, challenging and hopefully well-paid jobs. Thirdly, this international dimension can be important even for students who wish to work in Portugal. In fact, this international experience can make them the ideal candidates for positions within the companies and institutions that require a deep understanding of international linkages between markets.

First year

The students taking the double degree must attend lectures and complete a certain number of ECTS of the Masters of the Católica Porto Business School throughout the first year.

In the daytime regime classes are from Monday to Friday from 8:30 to 18:30 and Saturday from 9:00 to 13:00.

In the after-work regime classes are from Monday to Friday, from 19:00 to 22:00, and Saturday from 9:00 to 13:00. The calendar which schedules all classes is announced to the students at the beginning of each semester.

Subjects might be taught in Portuguese or English. Lectures of the Masters of the Católica Porto Business School take place at Catholic University of Portugal in Porto. Learn more here.

Second Year

In the second year, students will attend the curricular part of a Masters at Lancaster University Management School and they might choose to complete their dissertation at Católica Porto Business School or at Lancaster University Management School (except for the pathway MSc Management -> MSc Management, where the thesis has to be done at Lancaster).

At Lancaster University Management School, the school year is divided into three periods - Michaelmas (October-December), Lent (January-March) and Summer (April-September).

The dissertation will be assessed by the Católica Porto Business School and by Lancaster University Management School, according to their own rules: the final mark at Lancaster University Management School is based solely on the dissertation, while the final mark at Católica Porto Business School depends on the dissertation together with its public defence.

Applications

The double degree has a very limited number of places and candidates must hold an excellent academic and scientific curriculum to have access to this programme. The selection of candidates is made, at start, by Católica Porto Business School, but candidates must also comply with the standards normally demanded by Lancaster University Management School:

  • a final bachelor average mark of equal or above 14 points taken at a prestigious higher education institution.
  • an average mark of 14 points during the first year of the double degree at Católica Porto Business School (to be able to move forward to Lancaster University Management School in the second year).
  • advanced proficiency of the English language, proven by IELTS 7.0 ( with a minimum of 6.0 in each element), TOEFL iBT 100 or Pearson 70, which must be presented during the first year after admission in the programme (at Católica Porto Business School).

Católica Porto Business School and Lancaster University Management School meet three times a year (March, July and September) to assess applications. Entry Requirements

Graduates from different scientific areas can apply to the Masters of the Católica Porto Business School.

The application process to the Masters of the Católica Porto Business School must contain elements that provide evidence of the academic and scientific competence of the candidates, as well as the command of the English language. The GMAT test is valued in the selection process to assess the academic and scientific skills

Applicants will be selected based on the following criteria:

  • Academic and scientific curriculum
  • Degree classification
  • Professional experience or research

English language competence requirement

Proof of this requirement is made through an official level B2 diploma of The Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of References for Languages, or equivalent.

Admitted students who do not meet the English language proficiency requirement have access to a diagnostic test available at the Católica Porto Business School in the respective application stage.

The English diagnostic test is an examination equivalent to level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference (upper-intermediate) .The test lasts for approximately 3 hours and the structure of the exam aims to assess the following skills: Listening Comprehension, Grammar, Vocabulary, Reading and Writing. For a better insight into the structure of the diagnostic test, model tests may be consulted on the website of Cambridge Michigan and the candidates may select the test that corresponds to the ECCE - Examination for the Certificate of Competence in English.

Homogenisation Modules

The graduates in different fields of economics and management may be required attendance and approval in intensive base preparation courses in these areas - Homogenisation Modules. These courses are offered by the Católica Porto Business School in August / September, during the weeks preceding the start of the lessons. It is recommended, therefore, to the Applicants under these conditions that use one of the first two stages of application since the third phase will not allow access to Homogenisation modules.

Applications for Masters of the Católica Porto Business School are permanently open.

The Programme Direction meets three times a year to assess the applications: March, July and September. After this meeting, candidates are informed of the decision and the next steps.

Documentation for the Application Process

*Certificates must specify the courses taken, their assessment and ECTS, and the final grade of the course. If you have not completed a degree, you must present a certificate of the courses taken, their assessment and ECTS, and the current average.

Notes:
  • Applicants who held a degree in a foreign country must submit the certificate of qualifications: a) legalised by Portuguese diplomatic or consular authority, or b) with the Hague Apostille issued by the competent authority of the issuing country, if that country has acceded the Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Acts (the Hague Conference).
  • When the documents are written in a foreign language other than Spanish, English or French, the respective translation is due which, in the case of the certificate of qualifications, must be made pursuant to the notarial law.

Fees

FULL-TIME PROGRAMME

  • Submitting the application: Free
  • Acceptance and enrolment in the Masters: € 625. The fee will not be refunded in case students cancel their enrolment.
  • 1st year fees: 17,7€xECTS per month, for the total of ECTS to complete.
  • 2nd year fees: In case of the Masters Final Work is held in Portugal 1500 €.

Lancaster University Management School

At Lancaster University Management School, fees depend on the student’s nationality (European Union vs. other nationalities). Fees for the academic year of 2019/20, of the available programmes for the double degree, amount to £16,500 for EU students and £23,000 for other nationalities.

In any of the paths, except for the one who lead to MSc Management, double degree students are subject to the payment of the fees defined by Lancaster University Management School (which depend on their nationality), but benefit of a 30% discount due to the fact that they make their dissertation at Católica Porto Business School.

Students may also choose to complete their dissertation at Lancaster University Management School, but in that case, the discount is only 10% off. That decision must be made before students’ departure to Lancaster.

Merit Scholarships

The Board of the Católica Porto Business School decided to create a set of Scholarships for the purpose of rewarding the merit of the students whose academic performance deserves it. These consist in total exemption from tuition fees up to a maximum of 36 ECTS per semester and also from the enrolment and tuition fees.

Candidates are eligible for scholarship if they have an enrolment average of at least 16,0 points from a Portuguese University or a GMAT score of at least 650 points.

The merit scholarships can be renewed each semester. The eligibility criteria for the award of scholarship in the 2nd and 3rd semester master are:

  • Completion of a minimum of 30 ECTS per semester with no failures in the normal or resit assessment period.
  • Weighted average of the marks obtained in all the subjects concluded in the previous semester to the award of the scholarship equal to or greater than 16.0 values.

Students who complete the degree in a foreign higher education institution will only be eligible for scholarship award if they present a GMAT with a score of at least 650 points.

There are Social Scholarships to support the payment of fees: Scholarships from the Higher Education General Directorate (www.dges.mctes.pt)) and Social Scholarships of the Catholic University of Portugal.
