Flexibility in the choice between Economics and Management
The final choice between Economics and Management does not have to be taken at the entry point at the School.
The first year is common to both Degrees and covers the fundamentals of Economics and Management, which enables the student to make a more reasoned and informed choice as to the degree to follow. The possibility of change is always guaranteed.
Curriculum plans of Degrees in Economics and Management
The degrees in Economics and Management last for 6 semesters (3 school years).
The curriculum plans correspond to a total of 180 ECTS (ECTS - European Credit Transfer System)1 shared between:
- 16 Compulsory core courses common to both undergraduate degrees (96 ECTS);
- 12 Specific courses to each degree in Economics or Management (72 ECTS);
- 2 Free elective courses (12 ECTS).
Each course corresponds to 6 ECTS.
Católica Porto Business School has several courses in English, so students will have to attend courses in that language.
1 The ECTS credits are measurement units of a common European system (European Credit Transfer System) which translates the work done and the skills acquired by the students (classes, personal work, tutoring, group work, etc.
Specific courses
Of the 12 courses specific to Economics or Management, 4 are compulsory.
Of the 8 remaining courses specific to Economics or Management (non-compulsory), 3 courses (18 ECTS) can be replaced with 3 other courses in Economics or Management, taught at the Católica Porto Business School, at other universities in Portugal or abroad, as long as this replacement does not involve a significant overlap of contents with other courses attended by the students. To this purpose, it will need to be approved by the board of Católica Porto Business School.

Free electives
The two free elective courses may be from any scientific area (economics, management or any another) of any Degree offered by the Católica Porto Business, or any other School in the country and abroad, as long as authorised by the Board of the School.
This flexibility at curriculum level allows students to take a semester of optional subjects (30 ECTS), providing them with:
- An internationalisation experience, where they meet a new country, experience a new culture, improve a new language, strengthen international network of contacts and friendships with students from around the world;
- Training diversification;
- Depth is areas of greatest personal interest.
Project Subjects
The project subjects represent a paradigm shift of teaching and learning at the School.
Leaving aside the traditional teacher-centred approaches, the whole process of teaching and learning is focused on students and their learning outcomes. These subjects equate the theoretical learning with practice and contexts are provided for the development of essential skills for future professional practice. Accordingly, the three project subjects are hinged together at the same time they relate to other subjects of the study plan.
The three modalities of Final Project (Management / Economics Final Project, Business Plan Final Project; Internship Final Project) in the last semester of the degree extend the range of options to a total of 36 ECTS.
The syllabuses of the subjects are dynamic. Their constant update follows the international state of the art, the research of professors and the proximity of the School to businesses and other organisations.
A range of scientific areas, flexibility and training dynamics prepare the bachelor to work in multidisciplinary teams, allow the emergence of more hybrid 1st cycle education, between economics and management, and enhance access to a wide range of first quality jobs. These tend to be similar for bachelors in Economics and Management.
At the end of the 1st cycle, the School wants its bachelors to demonstrate a wide range of scientific, technical and cross skills, developed during the training period. Additionally they must be knowledgeable in English and have computer literacy.
Extra-curricular requirements of degree courses - English language and computer literacy
According to the Regulation on the Progression of the Degrees at the Católica Porto Business School, the student must obtain approval in the following extra-curricular requirements, apart from approval in the curriculum (180 ECTS):/p>
- English language skills (B2 level);
- Computer literacy (Word and Excel);
Students do not complete their degree without obtaining approval to these requirements.
The English diagnostic tests are carried out on an annual basis and the Informatics tests at the beginning of each semester. Students are automatically enrolled by the Academic Services until they obtain the respective approval.
The first diagnostic test for each of the requirements - English, Excel and Word - is free of charge. The following must be paid at the rate in force, regardless the student’s presence.
The student who obtains approval to a full diagnostic test succeeds in the respective requirement.
The student who does not obtain approval will need to complete this requirement in the following opportunities in order to end the Degree.
